Have you ever been on vacation or a business trip and discovered you have forgotten an essential item? It’s a huge pain. Let’s face it, packing is probably the least interesting part of any trip and possibly the most anxiety-inducing.

There’s a fine line between over-packing and packing what you need, when you are traveling solo there is another layer since you won’t have anyone who might be able to loan you an essential item. This packing guide will be your comprehensive list to ensure you have all your essentials and don’t overpack, while also providing tips on managing with fewer items.

Why Packing Smart is Essential for Solo Travel

Remembering all your essentials is important, especially if you are traveling solo. There isn’t another person who might have a phone charger or sunscreen you can borrow, that responsibility falls on you.

I know I feel better on my solo trips when I have everything I need, that peace of mind can make any trip so much better. Some items can completely ruin, or severely hamper, any trip if they are forgotten (medication or contacts/eyeglasses), so having a list helps a ton.

I remember one trip on which I forgot to pack a brace for an injury that was healing, thankfully I was traveling to a city where I could buy another, but that could have severely affected my trip. After that I started making a list for myself, I’m going to share my work with you.

The Golden Rule: Packing Light

Let’s get one thing straight: you don’t need to bring your entire wardrobe. The goal is to pack light but pack right. Focus on versatility and essentials. Here’s how to do it:

Choose the Perfect Travel Backpack

Your travel backpack is your best friend. It needs to be comfortable, durable, and just the right size. Travel backpacks come with various features and suitability for different types of travelers. Look for one with multiple compartments, padded straps, a functional back panel with a laptop pouch, easy access to the main compartment, and a secure lock system.

The size of the travel backpack you choose to bring is going to depend largely on its role. Are you only bringing a travel backpack? Is it your personal item? Your carry-on bag? The good news is that there are many quality bags available in multiple sizes, but this article is about the contents of the bag, not the bag itself.

Clothing Essentials

• – Mix and Match: Choose clothing that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. Think neutral colors and versatile pieces. Pack clothing items, not outfits.
• – Layer Up: Layers are your best friend. A lightweight jacket, a couple of long-sleeve shirts, and a few tank tops should do the trick. Layers can also save the day if the weather is not what you were expecting, or if you are trying to avoid bringing a bulky coat.
• – Comfortable Shoes: You’ll likely be walking a lot, so bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes and possibly a pair of versatile sandals. The right pair of shoes can take the place of dress shoes, walking shoes, or casual wear shoes.
• – Weather-Appropriate Gear: Check the weather forecast and pack accordingly. Depending on where you are traveling, the weather can be drastically different from where you live.
• Don’t forget a hat and sunglasses for sunny destinations and a waterproof jacket for rainy ones.

Toiletries and Personal Care

• Travel-Sized Everything: Invest in travel-sized toiletries to save space and comply with airport security regulations. If you are into saving money buy travel-sized toiletry bottles and fill them from your larger bottles at home, it saves so much money. Just don’t forget to label them… Not saying I’ve done that. but conditioner is not a good hand lotion, in case you were wondering.

• Makeup: This is really going to depend on what you prioritize, and is a very personal matter. You might be the kind of lady who doesn’t want to skimp on makeup and is willing to use all the space needed for it, and that’s amazing. If you are the type that just wants nice-looking skin, pare everything down to your essentials and pack those to save space.

• First Aid Kit: Include band-aids, pain relievers, antacids, or any other OTC meds you think you might need. Don’t forget the sunscreen, sunscreen is usually the first thing I pack (I’m very fair-skinned and turn red in the sun). I always also pack aloe when I am going anywhere that is very sunny. I would rather have it and not need it than be suffering from a sunburn. Pack toilet paper if you are camping or traveling to a place where bathroom facilities might not be available.

• Medications: Any prescription medications you might need, and any other medical devices you might need.

Tech Gadgets and Accessories

• – Universal Adapter: A must-have for charging your devices in different countries, this can obviously be skipped if you are traveling domestically.

• – Portable Power Bank: Keep your phone and other gadgets powered up on the go, remember to buy a power bank that can efficiently charge your devices. And remember to keep them in your carry-on, if you are traveling by plane, spare batteries can’t be checked.

• – Lightweight Laptop or Tablet: For those moments when you need to check in with the real world or need to catch up on the latest episodes of your favorite show, I understand.

Packing for Safety and Security

Safety is a top priority, especially when traveling solo. Here are some tips to ensure you and your belongings stay safe:

Keep Valuables Hidden

• – Money Belt: Wear a money belt under your clothes to keep your cash, credit cards, and passport safe. It’s also a great way to keep your hands free. I have also used a belt bag (formerly known as a fanny pack) for this purpose.

• – Anti-Theft Backpack: Choose a backpack with anti-theft features like lockable zippers and RFID-blocking compartments.

Stay Connected

• – Local SIM Card: Get a local SIM card or an international plan to stay connected.

• – Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contacts in your phone and a hard copy in your luggage.

Packing Tips for Different Types of Trips

Whether you’re heading to the beach, hiking in the mountains, or exploring a bustling city, your packing list will vary. Here’s what to consider:

Beach Vacation

• – Swimwear: Consider packing two swimsuits so you always have a dry one.

• – Beach Towel: A quick-dry towel is essential, they are far lighter than a regular towel.

• – Flip Flops: Lightweight and perfect for the beach.

Adventure Trip

• – Hiking Boots: Sturdy and comfortable for long treks.

• – Outdoor Gear: A water bottle, a multi-tool, insect repellent (at least that’s essential for me), and a compact first aid kit.

• – Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Moisture-wicking shirts and pants, a fleece jacket, and a rain poncho. This really depends on when and where you are adventuring.

City Exploration

• -Comfortable Shoes: Stylish yet comfortable for all-day walking.

• -Daypack: A small backpack for daily essentials instead of a purse. It keeps your hands free and can often carry more items easily. Use a day pack to carry essentials such as a sweater, camera, guidebook, and snacks while leaving your larger bag at the hotel. It also helps in organizing possessions and travel documents, ensuring you stay organized and prepared while traveling.

• -Travel Guide: An app for city navigation- I used CityMapper when I was in New York and I use Google Maps constantly. If you are old-school, or just like books, a local guidebook might be a good choice for you.

Travel light to concentrate on the journey and appreciate the travel experience without the burden of checking luggage.

Now that you know what to pack, let’s talk about how to pack it.

Use Packing Cubes

Packing cubes can be a game-changer. Be sure to select the kind that also compresses your items. Packing cubes are great for organization, but space is usually at a premium when traveling.

Roll, Don’t Fold

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them saves space and minimizes wrinkles.

Fill the Gaps

Utilize every inch of your backpack by filling gaps with smaller items like socks and underwear.

Packing List for Solo Female Travelers

Here’s a handy packing list to ensure you don’t forget anything important, remember what you bring will largely depend on the length of your trip (or willingness to do laundry on the go) and where you are traveling to:

Clothing

• –Shirts 1 per day of travel, or plan for as many as you need between washing your clothes. Pack long sleeves and short sleeves according to the expected weather and season. Consider packing a long-sleeved shirt for warm weather getaways and a T-shirt that could be layered for a cold weather trip.

• -Pants– 1 pair per day of travel, I always pack an extra pair in case I get caught in the rain or I manage to fall in water or get dirty. Choose pants you are comfortable in and meet your style needs, remember to pack mix-and-match items rather than specific outfits. Choose pants, jeans, leggings, skirts, or shorts based on expected weather, personal style, and what you are comfortable in.

• –Underwear 1 pair of underwear per day of travel, I will pack a pair or two extra in case there is an emergency

• –Socks 1 pair of socks per day of travel. The type of socks you bring will largely depend on what activities you plan. I do recommend buying comfortable socks that have adequate padding and breathability for any trip where you intend to spend time walking.

• –Shoes– I typically only pack one or two pairs of shoes- one pair for walking or casual wear, and one pair of specialty shoes (sandals for the beach, dress shoes for business, hiking boots for backpacking, etc.). Remember shoes can be versatile, if you pick the right pair of shoes they can work for casual wear, dressing up, and walking.

• –Outerwear– This again will depend on where you are traveling and the expected weather, it wouldn’t make sense to pack a heavy coat if you are traveling in summer. I typically sub in a hoodie for a lightweight jacket and pack multipurpose layers along with my lightest winter coat if I am traveling into a cold weather area.

• -Waterproof jacket– A lightweight rain jacket will work well for this item, it can also be layered with a hoodie in case the weather is colder than expected.

As a general rule of thumb, in the United States, we tip for anything we could do ourselves, but are having done for us; this mostly consists of tipping for services and tipping service workers in various service industries. The service industry in the USA heavily relies on tips as a significant part of income for workers.

Some of the things we tip for are very obvious, some are less so. It can be overwhelming trying to sort out how tipping customs work in the US, so I made this tipping guide with the goal of removing the mystery.

TL, DR

The big three that I tip for, and you will most likely encounter as a tourist, are servers/ bartenders at sit-down restaurants, delivery drivers, and transport drivers (including cabbies or Uber drivers).

Tipping Guide

Here are the common things you might want to tip for as a tourist in the US.

Understanding the tipping practices in the USA can help you navigate these situations with confidence.

Restaurants and Bars

• Sit Down Restaurant: 15-20% of the pre-tax bill. If your service was good tipping 20% is customary, for excellent service we might tip more, but again this is not expected. If you receive superior service, you might consider tipping more than 20% as a gesture of appreciation. If you receive truly bad service you might choose not to tip, and that’s ok, you are tipping for the service.Takeout from sit-down restaurants is fairly common in the US, and tipping etiquette is a bit less clear. Personally, I will tip for takeout, but I know plenty of people who do not, it’s a bit of a grey area. We technically tip servers for table service, so if you do not want to tip for takeout, you do not have to.

• Buffets: 10% of the pre-tax bill.

• Bartenders: $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of the tab. If you have an excellent bartender who not only prepares great drinks but also keeps you entertained consider tipping the 20%, they truly appreciate it.

• Cafe/Bakery: Tipping is optional but appreciated; leaving some change or rounding up is common.

• Fast Food Restaurants: We typically do not tip, occasionally very generous people will tip, but it’s not expected.

• Coffee Shops: In places like Starbucks or Gloria Jean’s there are typically tip jars, you can choose to tip if you want, but it’s not expected.

Hotels and Hotel Housekeeping

Some of the things listed here are very niche or only seen in high-end, or possibly themed/old-fashioned accommodations, so don’t be surprised if you don’t encounter a bellhop, concierge, or parking valet.

• Housekeeping: Hotel housekeeping staff typically receive $2-5 per night, left daily. Many people in the US do not tip housekeepers, it’s more of a nice gesture. So you can use your discretion on this.

• Bellhop: $1-2 per bag.

• Concierge: $5-10 for special services like booking reservations.

• Valet Parking: For valet service, it is customary to tip $2-5 when your car is returned.

• Room Service: 15-20% if the hotel hasn’t added a gratuity, your room service slip will have that information.

• Front Desk Staff: We typically do not tip front desk staff, nor is tipping expected. If the hotel you are staying at only has front desk staff and housekeepers, typically only the housekeepers get tipped.

Transportation

Rideshare/Taxi Drivers: For a rideshare or a taxi driver, including cabbies or Uber drivers, it is customary to tip 15-20% of the fare, the lower end is more common unless the driver is super personable and carries a conversation or gives you useful suggestions.

Airport Shuttle Drivers: $1-2 per bag if they load your bags, if not we don’t typically tip.

Limo/Private Car Services: 15-20% of the fare.

Personal Services

• Hairdressers/Barbers: 15-20% of the bill. Additionally, you might tip a few dollars to the shampoo person or blowout stylist. It is uncommon to find a separate shampoo person or blowout stylist in many smaller salons in the US.

• Massage Therapists: 15-20% of the bill.

• Nail Technicians: 15-20% of the bill.

• Esthetician (nonmedical): Tips are appreciated, 15 to 20% is customary, but the amount is up to the client.

Tours and Activities

• Tour Guides: $5-10 per person for a half-day tour, $10-20 per person for a full-day tour.

• Activity Instructors (e.g., kayaking, zip-lining): $5-10 per person.

• Boats/Recreational Vehicle Rental: This can include rental delivery or training. Tips are appreciated, but not required or expected. Anything from a nominal gesture to 5-15% are some of the common tips given.

Other Services

Please note that some of these services are very uncommon to come across (except delivery drivers, we love delivery here in the States).

• Delivery Drivers (food, groceries, etc.): For food delivery or grocery delivery, it is customary to tip the delivery person 10-15% of the total bill.

• Restroom Attendants: $1-2. This service might be found in some upscale places, but I can’t recall ever coming across a restroom attendant.

• Coat Check: $1-2 per coat, we tip when we receive our coat back.

General Tips and Tipping Etiquette

• Cash Tips: Cash is by far the easiest way to tip, I usually keep small bills that I can use for tips

• Credit Card Tips: Most food-related businesses (restaurants, bars, room service, Uber eats, etc.) allow for tipping on your credit card and many will have tip amounts listed as a percentage (typically 10% to 20%) so you don’t have to do any math.

• Service Charges: Check if a service charge is included in the bill, as this may cover the tip.

What Not to Tip For

We do not tip for skilled services in the US- this includes medical service, repair service, any utility or civil service, and any kind of service provided by skilled craftsmen. While some of these services appreciate tips or snacks (see famous Reddit posts about leaving your mechanic donuts, cash, or gift cards), some cannot or will not accept tips.

Best Solo Trips For Women In the US

San Francisco, California

What to Do:

The obvious first choice is visiting the Golden Gate Bridge or Alcatraz Island, but there is much more to San Francisco. The top of your San Francisco travel checklist list should include Fisherman’s Wharf, which is a tourist destination in and of itself with sightseeing, shopping, great food, and attractions (both modern and some more historic).

Conveniently the Powell-Hyde cable car line takes you right to Fisherman’s Wharf and you also get great views of Lombard Street, Coit Tower, and Alcatraz, not a bad sightseeing option for around $8 at the time of writing.

Why It’s Great: 

San Francisco is known for its diverse culture, safety, and endless activities. Plus, it’s a foodie paradise! It’s also a popular destination where you can easily meet other solo female travelers.

San Francisco’s fog has a name – Karl!

Seattle, Washington

What to Do: 

Check out Pike Place Market, take a ride on the Seattle Great Wheel, visit the Space Needle, and enjoy the Museum of Pop Culture.

Depending on the season you are visiting, taking a whale-watching trip is a pretty amazing experience, I only got to see two whales, but the other animals and views of the mountains were worth it.  I  recommend strolling from the Space Needle to the International Fountain and enjoying the views.

Seattle is friendly, has great public transport, and offers plenty of coffee shops to relax in between adventures.

Fun Fact: 

Everybody knows Seattle is home to the first-ever Starbucks, but did you know Seattle is also home to a bridge troll? Check out the Fremont Troll when you are there.

Portland, Oregon

What to Do: 

The Portland Japanese Garden, which is considered the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan, is one of many great attractions in Portland.  In addition to the Japanese Garden, there are several other parks in the city including the International Rose Test Garden, the Lan Su Chinese Garden, and Washington Park.  

Portland is home to the world’s largest independent book store Powell’s City of Books, it’s worth checking out. Portland is also home to a vibrant food truck scene, which just adds to the awesome eclectic nature of the city, Portland is on my “must visit” list, and I think it should be on yours.

Why It’s Great:

Portland’s quirky, laid-back vibe makes it perfect for solo travelers. Plus, it’s super bike-friendly.

Fun Fact: 

Portland has more breweries than any other city in the world.

New York City, New York

What to Do: 

Times Square is a great first stop, it is a busy, people-filled place, with so many iconic sights. If you are like me and don’t like super people-y areas, Times Square might not be a space you want to spend a lot of time in (there are also several scammers, but you can just walk away), the great news is New York has so much to do and see.

Central Park is huge and a great place to take a relaxing walk, or horse-drawn carriage ride, in the middle of a huge city. There are several museums to explore including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The American Museum of Natural History- which happens to be right next to Central Park. There are a number of Broadway shows you can see and tickets are usually readily available except for a few hugely popular shows.

Taking a ferry out to Liberty Island and seeing the Statue of Liberty is an iconic trip, you also have great views of the city. On the ferry trip back you can choose to stop at Elis Island and check out the museum, or look up your relatives (if they came through Elis Island).

New York literally has too many sights and attractions for me to mention them all in this post, so the last thing I will include here is pizza. There are several pizza tours you can take, but they are pricey, you can create a personal tour using Google Maps.

Why It’s Great: 

The city that never sleeps offers endless activities and attractions, with a bustling vibe that’s both thrilling and safe, though I do personally think you need to exercise caution and common sense.

There are several scams and possible petty crimes to be aware of in New York, much like any other big city. New York City is also a top destination for solo female travel due to its endless activities and vibrant atmosphere.

Chicago, Illinois

What to Do: 

Chicago is home to several great museums, the most famous of which might be the Art Institute of Chicago, I also think the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry are worth checking out if you have time.

Navy Pier is one of the top attractions in the entire Midwest, there are restaurants, games, and rides including the 200-foot tall Centennial Wheel. Navy Pier is also the starting spot for several boat tours through Chicago.

Millennium Park is a great place to relax, check out fountains and sculptures, and walk the tranquil gardens. Take a few minutes while you are there to look at the Bean (not its official name, which is Cloud Gate), I do think the Bean is much cooler at night, with the city lights reflecting off of it.

The walk along Lake Michigan is also not to be missed, just look out for the geese, they do not want to be your friend.

Why It’s Great:

Chicago’s mix of culture, architecture, and friendly locals makes it a solo traveler’s dream. As a pizza lover, I also have to add Chicago Deep Dish. Chicago is also a safe and exciting destination for solo women, with plenty of cultural and culinary experiences.

The one caveat I will place on Chicago is that it’s best to stay in the tourist areas, there are a few neighborhoods that I would not consider safe for solo trips, or tourists in general.

Austin, Texas

What to Do: 

Listen to live music on 6th Street in Austin’s entertainment district, Austin residents will tell you that you can find people performing all over the city. Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake is a very popular activity and you don’t have to worry about motor boats since they aren’t allowed on the lake.

The Texas Capital Building, which is the largest state capital building in the United States, is an amazing part of Austin’s skyline and a sight worth seeing. Austin, in addition to being the state capital, is known as the culinary capital of Texas so if you are a foodie, it’s the place to be.

Why It’s Great:

Austin’s welcoming atmosphere and vibrant arts scene make it an exciting destination for solo travelers. It’s also a great place to meet other women travelers due to its numerous social events and friendly locals.

Austin is known as the “Live Music Capital of the World.”

Boston, Massachusetts

What to Do: 

Boston is a city you can’t think about without remembering your school lessons about a certain tea party held at Boston Harbor in 1773. The city is a must-visit for a history buff, I haven’t made it there yet, but it’s on my “going soon” list. There are almost too many historic locations to list, but here are my five “must sees” for when I visit: Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, USS Constitution Museum, Paul Revere House, Bunker Hill Monument, and the Old State House Museum.

If you are like me and have always dreamed of going to Salem for Halloween, Boston is only 20 miles away. Halloween might be hard to get reservations for as some hotels are booked out for two-plus years for that week, but the town has enough dark history, ghost tours, and tourist attractions to be worth visiting any time of year.

Boston has possibly one of the most obsessed fandoms in all of sports (I say this as a Wisconsinite… Packers anyone?)- The Red Sox. The Sox suffered an 86-year championship drought, but the fans still make their way to Fenway Park, so if you are a sports aficionado, you might want to check out Fenway and its famous Green Monster.

If sports and history aren’t your cup of tea (get it?) the greater Boston area is also home to several incredible universities that you might have heard of: Harvard and MIT. There are more than 55 universities in the greater Boston area.

Why It’s Great:

Boston’s rich history and compact size make it easy to explore solo. Many women who have traveled solo to Boston appreciate its rich history and walkability.

Savannah, Georgia

What to Do: 

Wander through Forsyth Park, explore historic homes, and enjoy River Street for its food, shops, and street performers. Savannah boasts numerous rooftop bars, they are a great way to enjoy the city’s nightlife with a view.

Savannah is home to several ghost tours, I haven’t personally taken one in Savannah, but I have taken a few ghost tours, and I think they are worthwhile (even if you are a non-believer) for the awesome history and the experience.

Savannah’s charm, history, and walkability make it a perfect solo travel destination.

Fun Fact:

Savannah’s Historic District is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the U.S.

Denver, Colorado

What to Do: 

Denver is a laid-back city that is amazing for outdoor activities. Within the city you can check out local breweries, the Denver Art Museum, and the Denver Botanic Gardens.

If you are looking for a more outdoorsy experience Denver is 15 miles from the famous Red Rocks Park- don’t worry if you don’t have a car, there is a shuttle bus. Denver is also about 65 miles from Rocky Mountain National Park, which can be reached via bus if you do not have a car in the city.

Why It’s Great:

Denver’s outdoor activities and friendly locals make it a great spot for solo adventurers. It’s a fantastic place for a trip solo, with its friendly locals and numerous outdoor activities.

What to Do:

I personally would visit Charleston in the spring, for one reason, the magnolia trees are in bloom. I absolutely love the smell of the magnolia flower and it’s worth the trip just for that in my opinion.

In addition to the many iconic monuments on the National Mall, DC is also home to Arlington National Cemetery. The cemetery is a mile walk (there are transit solutions available) from the Lincoln Memorial, seeing the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a moving experience.

As the seat of the federal government of the United States, you can imagine that DC is filled with federal buildings, and many offer tours- some tours might need to be booked well in advance, as spaces are limited.

What to Do:

The Liberty Bell Center, which houses it’s namesake bell, is a great spot to start a history tour, and it’s located across the street from possibly the most important building in American history- Independence Hall. Independence Hall was the original capital building of the United States, and where the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Philadelphia is home to more than 100 museums ranging from art and science to children’s museums. The most famous museums might be the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which is widely known for its steps featured in the “Rocky” movies, and the now infamous Mütter Museum, which is a medical museum known for its medical specimens and human remains (it’s not for the squeamish or faint of heart).

Reading Terminal Market is worth checking out, it houses more than 75 vendors with everything from fresh produce to gifts- be sure to check out the underground portion- I haven’t been there in years, but it was so cool.

My last mention for Philadelphia has to be its famous cheesesteak. There are so many places to try one in the city, and every local has a favorite spot, I recommend checking out a few.

The Synik 22 is a high-quality travel backpack, and while I highly recommend it, it might not be the best choice for some travelers.  

The main drawbacks are the relatively high price and the small laptop compartment- it can fit a 13″ laptop, which is about the size of a Think Pad or a Chromebook, not a proper laptop. Not the end of the world, but something to keep in mind if you are looking to pack a laptop in this bag, or use it as an EDC.  At the time of writing this review the price was $330, which might make this backpack out of some travelers budget.

I can’t tell you if those drawbacks are deal breakers for you, only you know your needs and budget, but I can tell you that the quality, features, customer service, and warranty make the price well worth it in my opinion.

When I think of Hawaii I think of tropical birds, beautiful beaches, luaus, hula dancers, rain forests and an active volcano (or two). Hawaii is the home of the Aloha Spirit, Aloha means love, affection, peace, compassion, and mercy, and is both a greeting and a culture. It would be hard to find a more welcoming culture.

Hawaii is a great destination for a woman traveling on her own, with the only real drawback being the price (it’s expensive compared to many places). Hawaii has a variety of activities, including surfing, parasailing, exploring hiking trails in Volcanoes National Park, or relaxing on a beach.

Urban Adventures

Are Urban jungles, rather than the tropical kind, more your speed? Each of the major cities I have chosen for this list have a vibrant city center along with the relative safety a solo traveler needs to feel secure. Though these cities are considered safe, there can be some elements of scams, petty crimes and even violent crimes, so exercising appropriate caution, and using common sense, is a must.

New York, USA

New York is truly a destination that has it all, the iconic skyline, Broadway shows, live music, art galleries, museums, and amazing food culture. The shopping in New York is as iconic as it’s skyline with everything from high-end luxury stores to independently owned boutique shops.

It would be impossible to list everything you can do in New York here, but these are the “bucket list” places- the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park, the Empire State building and Rockefeller Center. The streets are fairly walkable and the public transportation system is vast and fairly easy to navigate, and much cheaper than a taxi or uber.

I visited New York for the first time last year and I really enjoyed my time there. I stayed just off Times Square and I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people. If you are an introvert I would consider staying a few blocks off Times Square.

My favorite experiences where walking in Central Park, visiting the museums, seeing a Broadway show (I saw “The Book of Mormon” it was hilarious), and just the vibe of the city. Oh, and the smell of the nuts they were roasting on almost every street, they were worth it, so good.

San Francisco, USA

San Francisco’s charm lies in its eclectic neighborhoods, iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, and a food scene that’s as diverse as its population. Along with it’s famous bridge, San Francisco is well known for it’s cable cars, street cars and trolly busses, the cable cars are the last that remain in operation anywhere.

In addition to Golden Gate Bridge and the cable cars, other notable attractions in San Francesco include Alcatraz, Fisherman’s wharf and Pier 39, and one of the largest and oldest China town’s in the United States.

If you have your fill of the city San Francisco is also close to Muir forest’s 1000 year old redwood forest, and only 50 miles from Napa Valley, where you can have wine tastings in the heart of California’s wine country. For women on a solo journey, this city promises safety alongside adventure.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo offers a mesmerizing blend of traditional and futuristic experiences, making it a captivating destination for solo female travelers. Tokyo, and Japan in general, is known for its safety, cleanliness, and efficient public transportation.

While in down-town Tokyo, be sure to check out Shibuya Pedestrian Crossing, known as the “times square of Tokyo.” It’s the largest pedestrian crossing in the world, with a few thousand people crossing at every green light, it’s also where many of the “Tokyo Dance Trooper” videos were shot (if you are old enough to remember that trend from years ago).

Like New York, there are too many things to do and see in Tokyo to mention in this short section of this post, but notable areas you’ll want to see are the Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine, Sensoji temple, Ueno Park, and Tokyo Skytree.

Sydney, Australia

When you think of Sydney you probably immediately think of the Sydney Opera House, I know I do. It was a dream come true when I got to see if for the first time a few years ago. Sydney is one of those cities that just has a vibe about it, I recommend walking around Circular Quay, at Sydney harbour, and stop at the shops and restaurants, take a ferry to the zoo, or walk to the Sydney Botanic Gardens.

I know Bondi Beach is the “go-to” beach, but consider taking the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, it’s about 6km (3.75 miles) long, and the views and beaches are worth it. Remember a water bottle (there are refill stations along the walk), your hat, and your sunscreen, and make a day of it.

Seattle, Washington, USA

Like Sydney, Seattle is a city that just has a vibe and it’s a great place for any woman looking to travel solo. The city is growing fast and is a hub for companies like Amazon and Microsoft, so it’s filled with trendy restaurants, bakeries, bars and hang outs.

There are the iconic attractions that Seattle is known for- the OG Starbucks, the iconic Space Needle, Pike Place Market and it’s famous pig and gum wall (I personally avoided this, but I understand it is a sight to behold), but there’s also some lesser known attractions and activities. There is the Fremont troll, gasworks park (but look out for the geese, they’ll chase you), and Kerry park where you can get a great photo of downtown with Mt. Rainer in the backdrop.

If you are a fan of Bigfoot, and really, who isn’t? Seattle is one of the best places, outside of possibly Willow Creek, California, to get the best Sasquatch merch.

Toronto, Canada

Toronto sits on the shore of Lake Ontario and holds the honor of being Canada’s largest city. Toronto is known for it’s eclectic neighborhoods, awesome food scene, friendly locals, Tim Horton’s on every corner, and safety, making it a great solo vacation destination.

Toronto has many neighborhoods and districts that are worth visiting, before you head there I would pick out the areas you want to see, as there are a lot and the city is beautiful.

There are several “must sees” in Toronto, I’ll list a few of them here, it’s really a matter of what you enjoy doing. Toronto, like Seattle, has it’s own tower- the CN Tower, which happens to be located between two other attractions in the Rogers Centre (where the Bluejays play) and Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada. In addition a trip to the St. Lawrence market is highly worth it, if you are a hockey lover the Hockey Hall of Fame is Located in Toronto, and the Distillery District is pretty awesome.

Stopping by Nathan Phillips Square will get you a photo of the “Toronto” sign, I stopped by after dark and got a pretty awesome picture of the sign and the lit buildings in the area, which I posted in this article.

If you want the best pictures of Toronto’s skyline, I highly recommend taking a ferry out to Center Island (and see it’s park while you are there) and take the picture there. This section has gotten a bit long so my last recommendation is actually booking one of the group tours that goes to Niagara Falls, I don’t normally recommend a tour, since they always seem so rushed, but in this case it’s a great way to get to the falls and see a few other sights.

Berlin, Germany

Berlin is a city with beautiful, historic buildings and landmarks, combined with sleek modern architecture, but somehow it works. Berlin’s efficient public transport and welcoming atmosphere make it easy for solo travelers to navigate and connect with the city’s unique vibe. Berlin is known for it’s night life, historic landmarks, parks and gardens, it’s cafe culture, and it’s many museums.

The most famous tourist destinations that you might want to check out are: Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Under den Linden and Alexanderplatz, all are worth seeing according to locals on Reddit. Besides the most famous stops you can check out Museum Island, which houses five museums, including the Pergamon, the Altes and the Bode. If you are into theater Friedrichstadt-Palast boasts the “largest revue theatre in Europe,” and honestly, I think it looks like a really great time. Lots of colorful sets and extravagant costumes, it’s on my Berlin checklist when I make my way there.

Natural Wonders

Do you like trees more than people? Are your favorite people actually animals? Are you trying to escape a population center and look at something other than cars and shops? These locations might be places you want to check out.

National Parks of the United States

The United States was the first country to create a national park system and has some of the most famous parks in the world. There are 63 national parks in the US that you can choose from (and over 300 more sites that are landmarks, nature preserves, or monuments). I have visited several parks and monuments and I had a great time at all of them.

The most famous parks are Grand Canyon National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park, and Yosemite National Park and all of them are amazing. Not only can you see cool things like geysers or a huge canyon (not in the same park), but they are also safe, from a human standpoint, for women embarking on solo journeys.

The parks are great places for hiking, camping and seeing wildlife. There are trails for all levels of ability in many parks, several have ADA compliant trails, so people of all fitness levels can enjoy the parks. You can also choose to find areas less visited where you can enjoy solitude. It all depends on what kind of visit you want to have and your abilities.

While the parks are safe for travelers, you do need to use common sense, these parks are still wild places. Please stay on marked paths, especially in Yellowstone, where you can find incredibly hot bodies of water and acid filled pools. Don’t wander off into the wilderness if you don’t have the skillset. Also give wildlife space- they are wild animals despite some being used to people. That really cool bull moose or bear does not want to be in your selfie, I promise.

Iceland

Iceland, known as the land of fire and ice, offers an unparalleled solo adventure for those drawn to its dramatic landscapes. Yes, Athens is one of the Greek Isles, and yes I already listed the Greek Isles, but Athens is special, and worth it’s own mention. I have not personally been to Athens yet, but it’s on my bucket list, and I think it should be on yours too.

As a mythology buff, I personally can’t wait to see the Parthenon, The Acropolis, the temples of Hephaestus, Olympian Zeus, and Athena Nike, and Panathenaic Stadium. Honestly there are so many monuments in Athens that I want to see that my list gets daunting. I am thinking of taking a couple guided tours when I visit, I will report back when I eventually make my way there.

Adelaide is a hidden gem in Australia. Adelaide was the first planned city in Australia making it an extremely walkable city, with a decent public transportation system. Adelaide’s CBD is surrounded by beautiful parks and gardens, making it far more relaxed than Sydney or Melbourne, and, in my opinion, a great choice for a first solo trip. Adelaide is the festival capital of Australia, with huge event such as Adelaide Fringe, which is the largest open-access festival in the Southern Hemisphere and lasts 31 days (and nights!), and 10 other major festivals held through-out the year. In addition Adelaide is known for it’s food scene, it’s wine scene, and it’s coffee scene.

If you couldn’t tell, Adelaide is one of my favorite destinations, I personally recommend heading to the Adelaide hills and enjoying the scenery and checking out Cleland Wildlife park, I held my first koala there and I was so excited. In the CBD spending an hour or two in the Central Market is well worth it, there are so many vendors (mostly selling food items), and there are many places to get lunch. I am not big into wine, but the Barossa Valley is beautiful and there are many wineries where you can enjoy a wine tasting.
